Package Says Delivered but Not Received: What to Do

Few things are more frustrating than a tracking page that says Delivered when there is nothing at your door. Most of these parcels turn up within a day or two. The rest get resolved through the seller, not the tracking site.

Here is what to check and who to contact, in order.

Short answer

Wait until the end of the next day and check around your home, your neighbors, your mailroom and any parcel locker; drivers sometimes scan a parcel as delivered before it arrives. Then check the delivery scan for the place and time, and contact the seller. The seller is the carrier's customer, so they are the one who can open an investigation with the carrier and send a replacement or a refund.

First, check these places

  • Porch, side door, back door, garage and behind plants or bins.
  • Neighbors on both sides and across the street.
  • Building mailroom, reception, concierge or parcel locker.
  • Your mailbox. Small parcels often go in the mailbox rather than to the door.
  • Anyone else in your household who might have taken it in.

Read the delivery scan

Open the full tracking history, not just the status. The last scan often names a place ("Front Door", "Parcel Locker", "Left with Individual", "Mailroom") and a time. Some carriers add a delivery photo or a signature on their own site.

Check that the city and postcode in the scan match yours. If they do not, the parcel may have been delivered to the wrong address, and the carrier needs to know.

A tracking site such as 24hTrack shows every scan the carrier publishes, but it does not have your address, the driver's name or the delivery photo. Only the carrier and the seller have those.

Wait 24 to 48 hours

Drivers sometimes mark a whole route as delivered at the start of a stop, or scan early to meet a deadline. Many "delivered" parcels appear the same evening or the next day.

Contact the seller, not the tracking site

The seller bought the shipping, so the carrier deals with them. Send the seller the tracking number, the delivery scan (date, time, place) and a short note that you did not receive it. Most sellers will open a claim with the carrier, or send a replacement or refund.

If you bought on a marketplace, use its buyer protection: Amazon A-to-z Guarantee, eBay Money Back Guarantee, PayPal Buyer Protection or your card issuer's dispute process. They have deadlines, so do not wait weeks.

When to contact the carrier directly

If you are the sender, or the seller asks you to, contact the carrier with the tracking number. For USPS you can ask your local post office and submit a missing mail request online; UPS, FedEx and DHL have claim forms on their websites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does tracking say delivered when I don't have my package?

The most common reasons are an early delivery scan, delivery to a neighbor, mailroom or locker, or delivery to the wrong address. Most such parcels turn up within 48 hours.

Who is responsible if a delivered package is missing?

The seller, who bought the shipping, is the carrier's customer and can open an investigation. Contact the seller first with the tracking number and the delivery scan.

Can a tracking website tell me where exactly my parcel was left?

Only as far as the carrier publishes it in the scan, such as Front Door or Parcel Locker. Tracking sites like 24hTrack do not have your address, the driver's details or the delivery photo.

How long should I wait before reporting a missing delivered parcel?

Check around and wait until the end of the next day, then contact the seller. Do not wait longer than the marketplace's buyer-protection deadline.
